TAMIL POCKET DICTIONARY
We have already mentioned a small dictionary which appeared a few years after the Jaffna Dictionary. Another small work 'Tamil Pocket Dictionary' or Akarƒti-c-curukkam, compiled by C. Vijay-aranga Mudaliyar and revised by C. Rƒjag†pƒla pillai, was published in 1883. The words in this dictionary number over 3000: and each page is headed by a moral distich from KuŠa˜. A short appendix gives the words used both as nouns and as verbs. This was intended. for students only. Hence there was an insistent demand for a handy and at the same time comprehensive work.
TRANOUEBAR DICTIONARY
To meet this demand, the 'Tranquebar Dictionary' appeared in 18921. though it was it was expressly based on Fabricius's 'Maladar-English Dictionary', it made very important change in the treatment change in the treatment of words. It followed Winslow in giving the imperative mood of verbs, i.e., the root, as the leading word. And, what is more, it adopted Dr. Graul's classification of verbs according to their conjugational changes. this obviated the necessity of giving was alphabetical only as far as the main word. The obsolete and rare words and meanings were generally omitted. This edition contained about 11,590 words and 21,305 derivatives and phrases, making 33,000 articles in all.
While these billingual (Tamli-English) dictionaries were thus making rapid progress, the anilingual lexicons remained stationary for a long time. The Jaffan Dictionary (1842), in spite of its defects, was very popular, as it supplied, to some extant, the growing need for a good Tamil dictionary. several editions of it appeared in Madras and almost every one of them was an enlargement. These enlarged editions were called pâ€சீr-akarÆ’ti or VirivakarÆ’ti. Many of these were prepared at the bidding of publishers who, in their anxiety to show an appreciminately. Even misprints were not corrected; and. with each new edition, errors of various kinds increased in great numbers.
N.KATIRAIVEL PILLAI'S DICTIONARY
To this general run, there were a few exceptions; and Mr. N. Katiraivâ€சீl Pillai's edition was one of these. He made large additional in poruËœ-akarÆ’ti, thought he left untouched peyar-akarÆ’ti which section alone concerns us, The same scholar, in a later edition of his Dictionary, loudly complained that his work had been plagiarized by his own publishers, This clearly shows the irresponsible way in which Tamil dictionaries were being compiled and published.
When such was the order of the day, scholarly attempt was being made, again in Jaffna, to compile a dictionary from various sources studied expressly for the purpose. The late Mr. C. W. Katiraivâ€சீl pillai was the compiler of this Dictionary. In his preface, dated 1st January 1904, he says:
1 The second edition of this work was published by the Rev. H. Beisenherz in 1910 and the third, by his successor the Rev. D. Bexell in 1933.
